Vata Dosha

In Ayurveda, Vata dosha is made up of ether and air elements, which makes it responsible for all movements in the body and mind. The qualities of Vata are light, cold, dry, rough, mobile, and subtle. When Vata is in balance, a person is creative, energetic, enthusiastic, and flexible. 

When Vata is out of balance, a person might experience the following: 

  • dry skin, hair, or lips 
  • constipation, bloating or gas 
  • joint pain or cracking 
  • poor circulation with cold hands and feet 
  • light, interrupted sleep 
  • anxiety, restlessness, worry 
  • scattered thoughts or racing mind

Pitta Dosha

In Ayurveda, Pitta dosha is made of water and fire elements, helping the body to transform food into nutrition. The qualities of Pitta are hot, sharp, light, spreading, and liquid. A person with balanced Pitta is a confident, enthusiastic leader with strong energy and a sharp intellect. 

When Pitta is out of balance, a person might experience the following: 

  • inflammation 
  • acid reflux 
  • sour stomach 
  • skin rashes or pimples 
  • irritability, frustration, anger

Kapha Dosha

In Ayurveda, Kapha dosha is made up of the earth and water elements, giving the body strength, endurance, and structure. The Kapha stage of life corresponds to childhood, when the body is growing and building muscles, bones, and sinews. The qualities of Kapha are cold, heavy, slow, stable, oil,y and smooth. When Kapha dosa is in balance, a person has endurance, a strong immune system, and a loving nature towards others. 

When Kapha is out of balance, a person might experience the following: 

  • weight gain  
  • congestion, excess mucous 
  • lethargy, apathy 
  • depression 
  • attachment, greed, hoarding
