Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word which translates to “the science of life,” is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, with origins dating back over 3,000 years to ancient India. It is based on the idea that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. This balance is achieved by understanding a person’s unique constitution in relationship to his or her environment. The five elements of space, air, fire, water, and earth are the backbone of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha) that describe the body’s systems as well as the seasons of the year. When doshas get significantly out of balance, it can lead to disease. To restore harmony, Ayurvedic Health Counsellors recommend dietary guidelines, lifestyle modifications, herbal remedies, yoga, massage therapy, pranayam (breathing exercises) and meditation.
